چکیده

Experimental Details: Materials Teflon (T) spheres (d T = 3.175 mm), Nylon-6,6 (N) spheres (d N = 3.175 mm), and sheets of aluminum (0.8 and 1.0 mm) were purchased from McMaster-Carr (Princeton, NJ). Circular frames were made by bending thin strips of aluminum (1.0 mm wide, 4–6 mm high, and 171–2 mm long) into circles of diameter 53.6 ± 0.2 mm. We glued the frames to square (75 mm) aluminum plates with 5-minute epoxy (Devcon), and cured the epoxy at 50 ºC overnight.

Phase separation of 2D meso-scale Coulombic crystals from meso-scale polarizable "solvent"

This paper describes the phase separation of millimetre-scale spheres based on electrostatic charge. Initially, polymeric (Teflon, T; Nylon-6,6, N) and metallic (gold-coated Nylon-6,6, Au(N)) spheres are uniformly mixed in a two-dimensional (2D) monolayer on a gold-coated plate. Oscillating the plate vertically caused the spheres to charge by contact electrification (tribocharging). Positively ...

Bacterial swarming is an example of dynamic self-assembly in microbiology in which the collective interaction of a population of bacterial cells leads to emergent behavior. Swarming occurs when cells interact with surfaces, reprogram their physiology and behavior, and adapt to changes in their environment by coordinating their growth and motility with other cells in the colony. Phase-separation transition in one-dimensional driven models.

A class of models of two-species driven diffusive systems which is shown to exhibit phase separation in d=1 dimensions is introduced. Unlike previously studied models exhibiting similar phenomena, here the relative density of the two species is fluctuating within the macroscopic domain of the phase separtated state. The nature of the phase transition from the homogeneous to the phase-separated ...

Effect of director distortions on morphologies of phase separation in liquid crystals.

We study phase separation from a nematic liquid crystal with spatially nonuniform director gradients. Particles of a phase-separated component, which is either an isotropic fluid (silicone oil) or a nonmesogenic photopolymer, accumulate in the regions with the strongest director distortions, thus reducing the overall energy of the system.

Scale invariance in coarsening of binary and ternary fluids.

Phase separation in binary and ternary fluids is studied using a two-dimensional lattice gas automata. The lengths given by the the first zero crossing point of the correlation function and the total interface length is shown to exhibit power law dependence on time. In binary mixtures, our data clearly indicate the existence of a regime having more than one length scale, where the coarsening pr...
